Glass-insulated microwires combine a metal or alloy core with a surrounding layer of glass. The choice of material and construction depends on the intended electrical, magnetic or sensing function.

Materials and construction

Core materials include gold, copper, silver and platinum. Diameter, insulation and required length are separate parts of the specification to discuss with the engineering team.

Magnetic and semiconductor wires

Iron-based wires can exhibit magnetic bistability associated with the Barkhausen effect. Magnetic-resonance wires are used in radio-absorbing materials, while semiconductor wires may use bismuth, antimony or indium antimonide. Material behaviour, suitability and performance must be assessed for the intended application.

Glass-insulated nanostructures

Glass-insulated nanowires have an electrically conductive core surrounded by glass. The core diameter and the overall diameter with insulation are separate specifications.

Specify the application

Describe the material, target geometry, insulation, electrical or magnetic requirements, and required quantity. MICRO NANO TECH will assess feasibility and discuss suitable options. Dimensions and acceptance criteria are agreed for each application.
